Math

The Newgrange School Mathematics Program is a multi-sensory program that is tailored to fit each student’s learning style, while conforming to the Common Core Curriculum Standards. In addition to basic mathematical operations, the elementary students are taught at a conceptual level. Physical, as well as virtual, manipulatives are used to teach concepts and facts.  Extensive practice is supplied in written, verbal, physical and computerized formats.

Students are guided through conceptual areas and their associated procedures and processes.

Elementary students study numbers and operations, geometry and measurement, patterns and algebra and data analysis, probability and discrete mathematics. Each student’s progress is closely monitored to ensure that they are correctly placed and appropriate instructional strategies are being used.

Examples of curricula and tools used at the elementary level include Otter Creek, My Math, National Library of Virtual Manipulatives, Geometer’s Sketchpad and AAA Math.

High School students continue to learn through a multi-sensory approach that is tailored to their individual needs.  High school classes address math necessary for post-secondary life, including skills necessary for college or technical school.

College preparatory high school math classes include Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus.  Newgrange’s multi-sensory approach does not sacrifice mathematical rigor, but instead, enhances the students’ learning environment, preparing them for continued education in math and related disciplines. Consumer Math and Financial Literacy are also offered, to address the need for mathematical knowledge in daily living.

Technology plays an important role in secondary math instruction at Newgrange. Various TI calculators, including those with graphing capability, are at all students’ disposal to assist them in learning. Computer based manipulatives and tools further aid the students in their learning. Due to low a student:teacher ratio, continuous student assessment occurs. Assessment results allow teachers to modify instructional methods to accommodate students’ unique learning differences.
